European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
