Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
